Amy Sheehan (VO): Take a stroll at a park on Queensland's Sunshine Coast and you'll easily spot the volunteers from Cycling Without Age.
The fluro-clad cyclists offer free community rides aboard their fleet of trishaws.
Volunteer Lois Carlson says the rides provide a sense of freedom to those who aren't able to ride a bike.
Lois Carlson: There's one that I remember that was a blind and deaf man, and I thought, now what's he going to get?
He went on with his wife, who he did sign language, and when she came back, they both were smiling and I said, ‘Well, what did he get? You know, what did he enjoy?’, and she said he was saying how the ocean and the smell of the ocean and the breeze in his face.
So, there's things that people get that you don't even realise.
Amy Sheehan (VO): Today there's an extra special trishaw being peddled around the waterfront.
Lois Carlson: We had a rickshaw donated to us from Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman. This one right here. Exactly this one right here.
Amy Sheehan (VO): Keith's mum, Marienne Urban, has been a volunteer with the group for two years.
Carol Fuller: We have his mother as a volunteer. She and I have been doing it for a long time.
His mum's here with us today, but she's not pedalling today because she's got a problem with her knee. But she's doing the signing on.
Amy Sheehan (VO): Unlike her son, Marienne isn't one for the spotlight, but she tells me even she didn't know Keith and Nicole were going to donate $20,000 to the charity.
Carol Fuller is peddling the now-famous trishaw and her passengers have a front row seat to priceless views.
Carol Fuller: We're still peddling and we're talking and we're enjoying the company of the people that we're taking for rides.
Amy Sheehan: What do you love the most? Is it when you get back and they talk about how the experience was?
Carol Fuller: The smiles, everything, all the way. They're looking at the water and sometimes we see fish, we see eagles in the tree that they're just observing the whole way around and then we get around to the front out in the open and under the trees and looking out to sea.
It's just amazing. We love it.
Amy Sheehan (VO): Graham Moores comes to La Bolsa Park most fortnights.
Graham Moores: I've got a scooter, an electric scooter, but sitting here and letting somebody else do the work, it’s just so great. And it’s designed for people that have mobility problems.
Amy Sheehan (VO): Today he shared his ride with a new passenger.
Graham Moores: Yes. She was 92. First time and she was in company with a chappy who was organizing just to take her for a walk.
I think one of the ladies here convinced her to come and have a ride and so she really enjoyed it.
Amy Sheehan (VO): Cycling Without Age is a global organisation founded in Denmark in 2012.
Its mission is to build bridges between generations and help prevent loneliness. Volunteers like Lois say, they get just as much out of it.
Lois Carlson: I've done a lot of volunteer work over my retirement, and I find it’s not just the elderly that we look after and care for, but we take disabled as well.
To see them come back and the enjoyment that they've had by the ride, it just makes you go home feeling like you've made someone happy today. And it's what makes it worthwhile for us volunteers.
Amy Sheehan (VO): And now thanks to a little celebrity endorsement, they're sure to get even more interest.
When Keith Urban called a Sunshine Coast charity to donate $20,000 the group couldn't believe what they were hearing.
Urban along with his wife Nicole Kidman, helped purchase a trishaw to take elderly and people with a disability on bike rides by the beach.
One of the volunteers is Keith's mum, and she loves nothing more than helping out.
