Shankari Chandran has won this year's Miles Franklin Literary Award for her third novel Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens.
The story is centred around a fictional Sydney nursing home that caters for multicultural residents, particularly from Sri Lanka. Through a large cast of characters, the story explores racism in Australia and the trauma of war.
Shankari Chandran is speaking to Book Show producer Sarah L'Estrange.
